When I first registered this domain back in 1996 I went to Tony KIng and tried to get them to setup a website back then honestly I was going to try and make some money off of it. A few years later I offered to do it for free several times. Eventually I took over maintenance of the parks and rec website just to help out the Rec Director and make sure the information gets out. Finally earlier this year the Town decides to setup it’s own website, I mean pay someone outside to design the website for them after I offered to do it for free. It’s ok but once you investigate it a little you’ll notice there are a few things that just aren’t right. First thing on the front page look at the news section, who does a news section on a website and puts the newest items on the bottom. Second only one person within the town government has access to update the website so if say they needed to put any urgent information on the site, or in parks and rec’s case put up rain cancellations and reschedules, don’t hold your breath waiting for the updates since the same person that took 13 years on my suggestion to setup a website for the town is the only one that has access to update it.

To me this is just one case where the employees of the town would rather spend money with a company outside the county rather than let one of it’s citizens volunteer to help, because the powers that be think they know better. Because of this and many more obvious irritations with the management of the town I have decided to run for Town Council this fall please come out and vote or even run with me so we can send a message that it’s time for the Town to work with and for the people not just try to manage us because they don’t think we know any better.

This Monday I attended my first meeting as a member of the Tourism Development Authority. Since this is my first meeting I went with the flow listening to others comments mostly taking cues from precedence, hopefully in a few meetings I’ll be able to step up and get the hard questions answered. During the meeting I voted aye on $19,500 worth of tourism dollars to be presented to the county commissioners for a vote, $16,000 t0 the Cooperative Extension for the Franklin County Farm and Craft tour and 3500 to Louisburg College for the MLK concert. For the $16,000 it’s a no brainer that the event will only get bigger and better. The Farm and Craft tour has been going on for 4 years and they have grown it from 100 attendees to 1000, with a good majority of the visitors coming from outside the county. The funds for Lousiburg College were a slightly harder pill to swallow but a good one. We do have a precedent of awarding funds for concerts at LC. The College has a 1200 seat auditorium I see any and all events there as good for bringing visibility to one of the county’s biggest assets. Yes the math on this particular grant means they’ll have to bring in 750 people to break even, hopefully they can do more than that so that next time they might ask for less $$.
If anyone wants them here are the agenda, LC Grant application, and previous meeting’s minutes.

Kudos to Ron Cox for his efforts to make downtown Louisburg functional again, now if we can just get all of those upstairs windows downtown turned into higher end apartments, and offices the residents might give the area the kick in the pants it needs.
